Poetry – A Villanelle: I Understand the Answer’s in my Genes

A Villanelle:

I understand the answer’s in my genes,
A spiral blueprint for my every thought,
A helix molecule for every dream.

So if a clarinet Begins Beguine,
And boxy feet discover foxy trot,
I understand the answer’s in my genes.

Or Tuesday may awake an unforeseen
Desire to see the shtetls Europe wrought
Or face the Swedish winters of my dreams,

And dates are locked for battles clandestine,
Against the tumorous foes my mother fought.
I understand the answer’s in my genes.

And should my words, my days, my in-betweens –
The very things my grandmother forgot –
Be lost, I hope within my cracking dreams

They hide; I hope that somewhere the Beguine
Survives, a solo clarinet of thought.
I understand the answer’s in my genes,
Encoding what remains within my dreams.
